Many people experience some form of skin complaint or disorder during their lives. We look at the most common types of problems and general care.

One of the most common reasons that Americans visit their Doctor is to remedy skin complaints and disorders. Often overlooked when we consider our health and wellbeing, the skin is actually the largest organ of the Human Body accounting for 12 to 15% of our total body weight . Covering a total area of 1.5 – 2 meters, the skin protects our internal organs from damage and germs, supplies the majority of our Vitimin D intake, regulates body temperature at around 37 degrees Celsius and is the medium for one of our Primary Senses, our sense of Touch.

The skin contains three layers, the Epidermis, the Dermis and a supporting Subcutaneous layer of loose tissue and fat. Packed with blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat and sebaceous glands it is a complex organ which is prone to disease like any other organ, some of which are primarily inherited and some which are the result of contact with the environment.

Common Skin Complaints

One of the more common skin complaints suffered by patients is Dry Skin. Most Commonly experienced during the winter months when our bodies are subjected to cold, drying, winds and central heating Dry Skin or Xeroderma often affects the skin on the scalp, hands, lower legs and ankles. It can usually be effectively treated by means of emollients but can be a symptom of a more serious disease such as Diabetes.

A skin disease which is commonly inherited is Psoriasis. This occurs when the cell replacement cycle in your skin is speeded up, in some cases by a factor of fourteen, leading to patches or lesions developing on the surface of the skin which can then become infected and inflamed. Psoriasis cannot be passed on to or caught from others and cannot be spread to other parts of the body. There are several types of Psoriasis including Plaque, Pustular and Guttate, the effects of which can be lessened to a great degree but cannot as yet be cured.

Eczema, sometimes known as Dermatitis, is a condition found in approximately 10% of the Adult population of the United States and about twice that figure for the pre-adolescent population. Whilst most of the last group grow out of their Eczema by adolescence it can return later in life. Charactorised by red, inflamed, dry, cracked, itchy skin, there are several types of Eczema. The most common is Atopic Eczema. This is an inherited condition for which there is no known cure at present. Irritant Contact and Allergic Reaction Eczema are perhaps the easiest to eliminate once the source of the condition has been identified. Other types of Eczema include Seborrhoeic, Varicose and Discoid.

Rosacea is a skin condition usually found in people of Northern European descent, although it can affect other populations, and is more common in women than men. Another inherited condition, the causes for which are as yet poorly understood, symptoms of Rosacea typically include Pustules or Pimples accompanied by small visible blood vessels on the skin of the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Occular Rosacea is a related condition which can affect the eyes making them feel dry and ‘gritty’.

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting most people at some time in their lives. Commonly seen as a skin disorder affecting adolescents, Adult Acne can be a problem well into middle age. It is caused by the overproduction of the natural body oil, Sebum, in the Sebaceous glands, which is then fed apon by bacteria living naturally on the surface of the skin. Waste products produced by this process can become infected and inflamed giving rise to the familiar spots and lesions associated with Acne. The symptoms of Acne are most commonly seen on the face, neck, chest and upper back, although they can appear on any part of the body.

Warts and Skin Tags are amongst the most common and easily curable skin disorders. Warts are in fact non cancerous tumors which can appear on any part of the body and can be spread by touch. Caused by the H.P.V virus, many strains of which we all carry, they are typically small, round, red raised lesions which appear to contain small spots making them appear ‘cauliflower’ like, and they can appear singly or in clusters. Skin Tags or Acrochordon, are small growths which are attached to the body by a small stalk called a Peduncle. They can appear on any part of the body but are most commonly found on the eyelids, groin and neck. They are non infectious and can be easily removed by severing the peduncle.

Serious Skin Complaints

The most serious form of skin complaint or disorder is of course Skin Cancer. Skin Cancer is found in two main types, Melanoma and Non Melanoma. Non Melanoma Skin Cancer is found in two different forms. Basal Cell Carcinoma appears as small red, waxy, shiny lumps which left untreated will turn Ulcerous. Squamous Cell Carcinoma appears as small pink lumps with a hard or scaly surface which can spread to other areas of the body. The most serious form of Skin Cancer is Melanoma. It is the name given to an overproduction of the cells which produce the pigmentation of our skin when subjected to sunlight, Melanin. Although it can spread throughout the body by way of the blood or lymph system, Melanoma is usually curable if detected in it’s early stages. Melanoma usually appears as a small mole like lesion which can change shape or color, become itchy or crusty and bleed. If you think you may have a Melanoma you should see a Doctor as soon as possible as time is a critical factor in successful treatment.

In the vast majority of cases Skin Complaints and Disorders are successfully controlled by medication and lifestyle changes and with vigilance and early intervention even serious conditions such as Skin Cancers have a high level of successful treatment.

Here are some common skin disorders – psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, acne, rosacea — plus treatments

The skin is the body’s largest organ and is our protection from the world. It can suffer from disease and the most bizzare skin conditions you could imagine, but most peoples experience is just a few common issues. There are of course much more serious things such as skin cancer, which is not a conditionas such but a disease. That has its own section on this site. Dry skin is very common skin complaints and can affect any area of the body. Usually the hands and feet are the driest body areas and creams can be purchased to keep the skin more moist and supple to avoid catching and splitting of the skin tissues. Atopic dermatitis is another common problem. This can occur at any time in your life for no obvious reason but can be trigger by an allergy to a detergent or other substance. Psoriasis is characterized by very itchy skin symptoms. Large patches or red raised and flaking skin. Acne, rosacea….
